What type of sod/grass should I purchase?
We recommend Fescue Blue sod in greater Sacramento and surrounding counties including the sierras. Well over 95% of all lawns now installed in these regions is the tall Fescue/Kentucky Blue grass blend. The old fescues used years ago were much broader leafed and not as pleasing to the eye. The new hybrid fescues are dwarfed having smaller blades and they look beautiful and have other resilient qualities. The Fescue is more drought and cold resistant because of its deep rooting system going more than 4 feet down with proper soil conditions. The Kentucky Blue grass is blended in because of its character of re-rooting open areas around itself. The Fescue that if uprooted or dies will not replenish and therefore needs small amounts of bluegrass blended in to the mix to keep your turf free of voids.
Perennial Rye is used less frequently in the greater Sacramento and surrounding counties to match existing older lawns. It can be used for heavy abuse and sports fields but requires more care, water, and fertilizer to look good.
There are many types of lawn seeds out there with different properties that truly don’t lend themselves to use as grass/sod in the greater Sacramento and surrounding counties for many reasons. For instance, they can’t take the heat or cold, require too much water, are too intrusive to gardens or surrounding planted areas, not green year round when dormant or too hot, the root system is not good enough to keep out weeds, or just not as durable. The two types of sod we recommend can have selective weed killers that eradicate weeds and are discriminate in not harming your sod.
